It contains exploration of some of the key concepts necessary to start understanding intercultural learning: culture, stereotypes and prejudice, intercultural learning as a process, transfer to everyday reality, suggestions for follow-up or going further. Participating countries: Poland (hosting) and United Kingdom. Number of participants: 28 ( 13 from the Poland and 15 from the United Kingdom)

What is CULTURAL DIVERSITY?
Diversity is at the core of cultural policies even though the concept remains rather unclear.
According to many academics, diversity is poorly defined, “analytically neglected” and in need of
“systematic or robust understandings” (Stirling, 2007). Thus far, official texts and academic
analysis have put forth some very broad meanings, including “the ethnically-marked cultural
differences associated with the international movement of peoples and, within national territories,
the claims to difference associated with the protracted struggles of in situ minorities to maintain
their identity and specificity in the face of the homogenizing force of national cultures”(Benett,
2001). The Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions
refers to diversity as “the manifold ways in which the cultures of groups and societies find

expression”.
